First-Year Learning Community

EDEC 160 Questions of Equity in Childhood and Adolescence

Welcome!

This first-year experience is designed for students in any major who are interested in issues of equality, fairness, and privilege and how these issues affect the self-identity, learning, and development of children and adolescents in the United States.

As a student in this FLC, you enroll in the year-long course called EDEC 160 Questions of Equity in Childhood and Adolescence. You will join a community of students who share your interest in understanding the different forces that affect a child’s life and who are passionate about finding ways to support children and families who face significant barriers to success. With your new colleagues, you will further your critical thinking skills and diversity awareness through critical analysis of multicultural children’s and young adult literature and through the close examination of social justice case studies.

This FLC is open to all First-Year Students. Students who earn a grade of C- or better meet the Oral Communication (Area A1) GE requirement in the fall semester and the Critical Thinking (Area A3) GE requirement in the spring, plus 2 units of elective credit.

How do I know that this First-Year Learning Community is right for me?

This FLC is a great choice…

  • If you wish to join a community of students who are passionate about making the world a better place for all children and families

  • If you are considering any career working with children and families (such as teaching, family-focused social work or counseling, juvenile justice, developmental therapist, behavior analyst, children’s librarian, etc.)

  • If you want to further your critical thinking and advocacy skills in a small and supportive community
